VIENNA, AUSTRIA / RankWire.AI / – In preparation, Austria is developing BEACONSAT, its first ever military satellite and the largest spacecraft built domestically so far. Designed to identify and examine disruptions impacting global navigation satellite systems such as GPS and Galileo, the satellite is scheduled for launch in February 2027 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The initiative aims to detect jamming and spoofing signals from orbit and collect data on when and where navigation signals are compromised.

Serving as a technology demonstrator, BEACONSAT is part of a multi-year research and development effort. Jamming refers to radio interference that obstructs or diminishes satellite navigation signals, whereas spoofing involves transmitting false positioning data that can lead receivers to determine incorrect locations. Satellite navigation is critical for aircraft, ships, vehicles, drones, emergency services, and numerous other systems. Austria’s Defence Ministry anticipates that the mission will generate valuable data to support operational activities and enhance understanding of GNSS interference.
Based in Schwechat, GATE Space, a space technology firm, is spearheading the BEACONSAT project and holds overall responsibility for the mission. Established in 2022 as a spin-off from TU Wien, the company specializes in developing chemical propulsion systems that enable satellites to maneuver in orbit. For BEACONSAT, GATE Space supplies the propulsion technology, satellite structure, and thermal management solutions. The firm has performed more than 8,000 hot-fire engine tests near Vienna Airport under atmospheric and vacuum conditions.
Core technology of the satellite mission originates from Austrian firms
Key systems for Austria’s first military satellite are supplied by other European companies. Graz-based IGASPIN offers technology capable of detecting and analyzing GNSS interference with high accuracy. Denmark’s Space Inventor provides additional satellite components, including the onboard computer. The project integrates commercial space hardware with systems specifically developed for the BEACONSAT demonstration mission. Furthermore, Austria’s Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure has contributed approximately 750,000 euros in funding through Austria Wirtschaftsservice to support GATE Space.
The European Space Agency supports and co-finances the project via its ESA Marketplace program, designed for technology demonstrations. This initiative allows commercial space technologies to be tested for security-related applications. Officials from Austria describe BEACONSAT as a demonstrator rather than an independent operational satellite program. Data collected will shed light on interference affecting satellite navigation signals from orbit and will inform the Defence Ministry’s efforts as Austria develops its military space capabilities.
BEACONSAT integrates into Austria’s expanding space strategy

Scheduled for launch in February 2027 via a Falcon 9, BEACONSAT will begin its mission by collecting and analyzing GNSS interference data. This effort involves collaboration among Austria’s Defence Ministry, GATE Space, and other specialized European technology firms.
