Product approval is valid across the UK, while the electricity safety change applies specifically to England, Wales, and Scotland.

Retail Sector Prepares for Approved Plug-In Solutions

Over 85% of participants supported the interim specification, with most also backing the plug-in amendments. Respondents included manufacturers, installers, network operators, electricians, academics, and consumer groups. Some expressed concerns regarding older household wiring, noncompliant online products, and the need for clear instructions. Others highlighted the importance of distinguishing between plug-in solar panels and plug-in battery systems.
Retailers such as B&Q, Currys, Amazon, and Lidl are already preparing for this new category of products. These solutions offer households unable to install traditional rooftop systems, including renters and residents with balconies or outdoor spaces, an alternative option. Systems utilizing the new connection method cannot operate legally before August 27. From that date onward, only approved products within the 800-watt limit will be permitted to connect via standard household sockets.
